If you spend time on Lake Granbury, you already know — the water here is made for wakesurfing. And if you're looking for a Phase Five wakesurf board, you don't have to order one online and hope you picked the right size or shape.

Because wakesurfers are picky — and the board that works great for one rider may feel completely wrong to another.
Why Phase Five?
Phase Five has been one of the major names in wakesurfing for years, with an especially deep history in skim-style wakesurfing.
Their lineup has grown well beyond skim boards, though. Today Phase Five offers everything from highly technical skim shapes to legitimate surf-style boards designed for carving, airs and powerful rail-to-rail riding.
One thing we like about Phase Five is how much rider input makes its way into the boards. Riders like Jett Lambert, John Akerman, Bailey Rush, Sean Silveira, Whitley Stewart and Parker Payne aren't just names attached to graphics — their riding has helped shape boards designed for very different styles.
And then there's Drew Danielo, one of the riders who helped define modern wakesurfing and a huge part of Phase Five's history. Drew is also our contact at P5, so we've had the opportunity to work with him directly, which is pretty cool for guys who genuinely love the sport.
Phase Five Boards We Like
Phase Five has a big lineup, and we're not going to pretend every rider needs the same board. These are some of the shapes worth knowing.
Phase Five Hammerhead V3
The Hammerhead has one of the most recognizable shapes in wakesurfing. Its symmetrical-looking nose and tail design makes it especially well suited for revert riding, switch riding and technical skim tricks.
It's a board for riders who already have the fundamentals and want something built around progression.
Best for: Intermediate to advanced skim riders, revert riding, switch riding and technical tricks.
Phase Five Matrix Pro
The Matrix Pro is a high-performance skim board built for riders who want speed, control and plenty of release for technical tricks.
It's less about being a forgiving beginner board and more about giving an experienced rider a platform that can keep progressing as their trick list grows.
Best for: Intermediate to advanced skim riders looking for a fast, technical performance board.
Phase Five Key V2
The Key V2 is another performance-oriented skim shape and one of the boards we like for riders who want speed without feeling completely locked into the wave.
It can be a great progression board, but we wouldn't automatically call it the beginner board for everybody. Rider weight, board size and the wave behind the boat all matter.
Best for: Intermediate and progressing skim riders looking for speed, release and technical capability.
Phase Five Key Jett Shreds
Jett Lambert — better known to a lot of the wakesurf world as Jett Shreds — has become one of the riders pushing technical skim riding forward, and the Key Jett Shreds reflects that style.
It's based around the Key platform with Jett's signature treatment and is aimed at riders who want a legitimate performance skim board rather than simply a cool graphic.
We occasionally have previous-model-year boards available at a discount, so these can also represent a killer value when we have them.
Best for: Progressing to advanced skim riders and riders who like a loose, technical board.
Phase Five MVP V4
The redesigned 2026 MVP V4 is John Akerman's pro model and is one of the more interesting performance skim boards in the current Phase Five lineup.
For 2026, Phase Five gave it a more aggressive skim outline with a pulled-in pin nose, bat tail, tapered core and V-Spline bottom. The result is a board aimed squarely at technical riding and progression.
John has also been really supportive of what we're doing at The Grill Guys, which makes having his board hanging in our Granbury shop even cooler.
Best for: Advanced skim riders, technical tricks, spins, shuvs and riders who want a high-performance pro-level board.
Phase Five Phantom
Here's where the Phase Five lineup changes gears.
The Phantom is a surf-style board — not a skim board.
Designed with Parker Payne, the Phantom is built for riders who want speed, carving, airs and a more traditional surf-style feel behind the boat.
If you've primarily ridden Phase Five skim boards and want to see what the surf side of the lineup can do, the Phantom deserves a look.
Best for: Intermediate to advanced surf-style riders, carving, airs and aggressive surf riding.

Before choosing a Phase Five board, the first question we usually ask is:
How do you want to ride?
A skim-style board generally has a thinner profile and smaller fin setup that allows the board to release more easily. That's what makes these boards so good for spins, shuvs, reverts and technical tricks.
A surf-style board generally carries more volume and larger fins, producing more hold and a planted feel through turns. They're built around carving, pumping, bottom turns and airs.
Neither style is automatically more advanced than the other. Some of the best wakesurfers in the world ride at an incredibly high level in both disciplines.
And plenty of us end up owning both.
Your Boat and Wave Matter More Than You Think
This is one of the biggest things people overlook when buying a wakesurf board.
Modern surf boats from Nautique, MasterCraft, Centurion, Malibu, Tigé and others can all produce very capable surf waves, but those waves don't necessarily feel the same.
Wave height, length, steepness and push can change dramatically based on the boat, ballast, surf system, crew weight and speed.
We spend a lot of time around different surf boats and riders, and our relationship with Buxton Marine has also given us the opportunity to spend more time around the latest Nautique G-Series boats and experiment with NSS, speed and wave shape.
But there isn't one universally “best” surf boat any more than there's one universally best wakesurf board.
A board doesn't know what logo is on the side of the boat. It only knows the wave underneath it.
That's why we'd rather know what you're riding behind before telling you what board to buy.
Size Matters Too
Phase Five publishes rider-weight recommendations for its boards, and they're a very useful starting point — but they're not the whole story.
A newer rider may benefit from a little more board underneath them for added stability, speed and forgiveness.
An experienced rider may intentionally size down because they want a board that's quicker and easier to throw around.
Your weight, ability, riding style and wave all work together.
That's one reason we don't love simply saying, “You weigh 185 pounds, buy this size.”
Wakesurfers are picky.
Don't Forget About the Fin
Fin setup can dramatically change how a wakesurf board feels.
Generally, more fin means more hold and stability, while less fin means more release and a looser feel.
That's especially noticeable on skim boards. Phase Five even recommends larger fins for riders who want additional stability, with experienced riders often moving toward smaller fins as their riding progresses.
Before deciding you don't like a board, sometimes it's worth experimenting with the fin first.
Which Phase Five Board Should You Buy?
Instead of picking a board because somebody on Facebook says it's the greatest board ever made, start with five questions:
- How much do you weigh?
- What's your current ability level?
- Do you want to carve and go big, ride technical skim tricks, or do some of both?
- What boat and wave are you riding behind?
- Who else needs to be able to ride the board?
Those answers will narrow the Phase Five lineup down pretty quickly.
And whenever possible, ride different boards.
Specs tell you a lot.
Your feet tell you more.
